Itaru Matsuno is Head of the UNESCO Peace Education Promotion Department at Nagoya University of Economics Ichimura Senior High School. Grounded in UNESCO’s Preamble, “building peace in the minds of people,” he leads Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) practices through dialogue and international exchange. His project was selected as a domestic nominee for the UNESCO–Japan Prize on ESD by MEXT, adopted by the EDU-PORT Support Project, and awarded the ESD Grand Prize, reflecting its significant educational impact.
Through ICT-enabled collaborative learning, students engage in refugee support, fair trade, and school partnerships, achieving outcomes in self-efficacy and global citizenship. He promotes multi-stakeholder partnerships with schools in Taiwan, Korea, Cambodia, and Jordan, and organizations including UNHCR, UNRWA, and JICA. His work contributes to scalable models for building sustainable, peaceful societies through education.
